Employment Visa

Here is a list of the most common visa categories and the standard documents required. If you are unsure which category you should apply for or which documents are required, please contact the Visa Section.

1. Professor

Activities authorized to engage in: Activities for research, direction of research or education at colleges, equivalent educational institutions or Kotosenmongakko.

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Must obtain Certificate of Eligibility to apply for this visa.

2. Artist

Activities authorized to engage in: Activities for the arts that provide income, including music, the fine arts, literature, etc. (excluding the activities described under Entertainer).

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Must obtain Certificate of Eligibility to apply for this visa.

3. Religious Activities

Activities authorized to engage in: Missionary and other religious activities conducted by members of foreign religious organizations.

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Must obtain Certificate of Eligibility to apply for this visa, or contact the Visa and Consular Section for an alternative procedure.

4. Business Manager

Activities authorized to engage in: Activities to commence the operation of international trade or other business, to invest in international trade or other business and to operate or manage that business, or to operate or manage international trade or other business on behalf of the foreign nationals (including the foreign corporations; hereinafter in this section foreign corporation) who have begun such an operation or have invested in such a business (excluding the activities to engage in the operation or management in the business which are not allowed without the legal qualifications described in Legal/Accounting Services).

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Must either obtain a Certificate of Eligibility or read on for an alternative procedure.

Business Manager Visa and Intra-company Transferee Visa

Visa for a person who is transferring to a branch office, representative office or joint venture company in Japan, and who has been employed by the present company for more than one year.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Passport (in original with at least two blank visa pages).
  2. Visa Application Form with QR Code PDF, filled in digitally but signed by hand. (Russian nationals and nationals of NIS (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) should submit 2 Visa Application Forms with photo.) Hand written applications must use the form Visa Application Form without QR code PDF and must be filled out in block letters.
  3. Photo:
    • Taken less than 6 months before the date of application.
    • Both color and black and white photos are accepted.
    • Approximately 45×45 or 35×45 mm.
    • Facing straight to the camera and with white background.
    • Well centered with room above and below the head.
    • Photo quality, without smears or markings and with no shadow over the face.
  4. Letter from present employer, stating:
    1. reasons for sending the applicant to Japan;
    2. applicant's present position and proposed new position in Japan;
    3. terms of the applicant's assignment, such as duties, length of assignment, salary and any other allowances;
    4. any other pertinent information regarding the applicant, such as details of accompanying Dependants.
  5. Brochure of employer's company showing relationship with the Japanese company to which applicant is being transferred.
  6. Annual report.
  7. Complete listing of all non-Japanese personnel employed by the Japanese company, giving the following details for each:
    1. name;
    2. nationality;
    3. position within the company;
    4. visa status in Japan
  8. Applicant's curriculum vitae.
  9. Copy of any graduation certificate the applicant may have.
  10. Copy of Swedish residence permit card (if applicable).

5. Researcher

Activities authorized to engage in: Activities to engage in research on the basis of a contract with public or private organisations in Japan (excluding the activities described in the Professor section).

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Must either obtain a Certificate of Eligibility or read on for alternative procedure.

Researcher Visa

Anyone wishing to enter Japan to undertake research in a company or organisation must apply for a visa, regardless of nationality.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Passport (in original with at least two blank visa pages).
  2. Visa Application Form with QR Code PDF, filled in digitally but signed by hand. (Russian nationals and nationals of NIS (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) should submit 2 Visa Application Forms with photo.) Hand written applications must use the form Visa Application Form without QR code PDF and must be filled out in block letters.
  3. Photo:
    • Taken less than 6 months before the date of application.
    • Both color and black and white photos are accepted.
    • Approximately 45×45 or 35×45 mm.
    • Facing straight to the camera and with white background.
    • Well centered with room above and below the head.
    • Photo quality, without smears or markings and with no shadow over the face.
  4. Contract or agreement with full details of the terms and conditions of employment.
  5. Letter of invitation from Japan.
  6. Documents regarding the business operation of the employer in Japan:
    1. transcript of corporate registration;
    2. certificate of payment of corporate tax;
    3. balance sheet and profit & loss statement;
    4. annual report.
  7. Financial proof of adequate funds to meet all necessary expenses, including living and travelling expenses.
  8. Statement from the applicant explaining the nature of the research to be undertaken in Japan.
  9. Applicant's curriculum vitae.
  10. Copy of any graduation certificate the applicant may have.
  11. Copy of Swedish residence permit card (if applicable).

6. Engineer / Specialist in Humanities / International Services

To be engaged in the fields of science and engineering, or jurisprudence, economics, sociology and other areas of the humanities, or to be engaged in activities which require a specialist knowledge of foreign cultures.

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Must submit Certificate of Eligibility to apply for this visa.

7. Intra-Company Transferee

Activities authorized to engage in: Activities on the part of personnel who are transferred to business offices in Japan for a limited period of time from business offices which are established in foreign countries by public or private organisations which have head offices, branch offices in Japan and who engages at these business offices in the activities described in the Engineer or Specialist in Humanities/ International Services. Applicant must have worked for his/her company a minimum of one year.

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Applicants must either obtain a Certificate of Eligibility or read the Business Manager section for an alternative procedure.

8. Entertainer

Activities authorized to engage in: activities to engage in theatrical performances, musical performances, sports, or any other show business (excluding the activities described in the Business Manager section).

Period of stay: 15 days, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or 3 years.

Must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility or read on for alternative procedure.

Entertainer Visa

Members of rock bands or similar groups, including non-performing members accompanying the group (e.g. tour managers, sound technicians, etc.) and models must obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to apply for a visa. Entertainers who are traveling to Japan to dance must also obtain a Certificate of Eligibility to apply for a visa. Classical musicians, members of symphony orchestras, theatre groups, opera singers, or professional sportsmen or women who have been invited to Japan either to perform publicly for remuneration or to participate in a competition must also obtain visas.

These applicants, however, may, in the place of a Certificate of Eligibility, present the following documents to apply for a visa. Please note that if an applicant is unsure as to what category he/she falls under, the applicant should contact the Visa and Consular Section directly to save time and avoid confusion.

Application without Certificate of Eligibility

Anyone wishing to enter Japan as a performing artiste, model or professional athlete must apply for a visa, regardless of nationality.

REQUIREMENTS

  1. Passport (in original with at least two blank visa pages).
  2. Visa Application Form with QR Code PDF, filled in digitally but signed by hand. (Russian nationals and nationals of NIS (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan) should submit 2 Visa Application Forms with photo.) Hand written applications must use the form Visa Application Form without QR code PDF and must be filled out in block letters.
  3. Photo:
    • Taken less than 6 months before the date of application.
    • Both color and black and white photos are accepted.
    • Approximately 45×45 or 35×45 mm.
    • Facing straight to the camera and with white background.
    • Well centered with room above and below the head.
    • Photo quality, without smears or markings and with no shadow over the face.
  4. Contract of employment.
  5. Letter of invitation from Japan.
  6. Letter of guarantee from the promoter or agent in Japan.
  7. Documents regarding the business operation of the promoter or agent in Japan:
    1. transcript of corporate registration;
    2. certificate of payment of corporate tax;
    3. balance sheet and profit & loss statement.
  8. Schedule of performances in Japan.
  9. A list of all visa applicants.
  10. Copy of Swedish residence permit card (if applicable).

9. Skilled Labor

Activities authorized to engage in: service that requires industrial techniques or skills belonging to special fields on the basis of a contract with a public or private organisation in Japan. Applicant must fulfill certain conditions concerning personal history and work status.

Period of stay: 3 months, 1 year, 3 years or 5 years.

Must obtain Certificate of Eligibility to apply for this visa.
